Thadeus Beginning Electric Lead Guitar Featuring the Nashville Numbering System

A complete beginner's course in electric lead guitar, built on the Nashville Numbering System.

Nashville Numbering System

What This Book Is

Thadeus Beginning Electric Lead Guitar Featuring the Nashville Numbering System is a 128-page instruction book by Casey Ray Shaw. It teaches a complete beginner how to play electric lead guitar using the Nashville Numbering System, the same numbering method used by Nashville session players and worship bands across the country. Instead of memorizing the letter names of every note in every key, you learn the numbers 1 through 7. Those seven numbers work in every key on the guitar.

What You Will Learn

  • The A major scale in all five positions on the fretboard
  • Every chord that belongs to the key of A and how to play those chords in each of the five positions
  • The arpeggios for every chord in the key
  • 3rd and 6th harmonies over the chords, where scales start to sound like real lead guitar
  • How to transpose everything you have learned into every other major key

Who It Is For

  • Students age 8 and up who know nothing about music or guitar
  • Adults who have tried to learn guitar before and got stuck on open chords
  • Intermediate players who want to finally understand the Nashville Number System on the fretboard, not just on a chord sheet
  • Parents or teachers who want a structured lesson plan to teach from
  • Players who read from number charts and want to know what the numbers actually mean on the neck

Who It Is Not For

  • Advanced players looking for jazz theory or modal improvisation
  • Anyone looking for traditional sheet music notation. It teaches numbers and finger positions instead of standard staff notation or guitar tablature (tab).
  • Anyone unwilling to put in the practice time. The method is simple. It still takes practice

Who Thadeus Is

Thadeus is Casey’s oldest grandson and the boy on the cover of the book. About a year ago, Thadeus asked Casey to teach him guitar. Casey started him on the Nashville Numbering System from day one, and the lessons Casey wrote down for Thadeus became this book. Thadeus is named throughout the book in the voice of the student, so as the reader works through the lessons, they are learning alongside him.
